Mashed potatoes, Angela said. It was mashed potatoes that made her cry.
She was describing her first night in her new home with her children. Her first night with her own pots and pans, her own cooker, and her own supplies.
She had asked the children what they wanted for dinner, and they had demanded their favourite: Sausages, beans, and mashed potato. And as she watched them tucking in, she cried.
It might have been relief, or perhaps she was crying for four lost years. They had spent four years homeless, two of them in a hotel that is notorious for crime and anti-social behaviour.
