The Irish Nurses & Midwives Organisation (INMO) is to call on its members to accept the Labour Court's recommendations subject to negotiations.
Members of the INMO strike committee gathered for a private meeting at 2pm this afternoon where they discussed the recommendations that saw three days of strike action postponed this week.
The proposals involve the negotiation of a new contract and clarifications to be made, which will take place over the coming three weeks.
To ensure that members have the full proposals before voting, the Executive will ballot members between March 11 and 25.
The union will also organise regional and workplace-based information sessions over the coming weeks.
The deal will mean new entrants move up the pay scale after 16 weeks to €32,171.
There is also a new, higher salary scale for staff nurses and midwives.
The new scale is also shorter meaning that staff get to a maximum salary and long-service increment faster.
The deal also includes an extension of allowances to maternity services and medical and surgical areas worth €2,229 or €3,350.
Senior staff are entitled to higher nurse and midwife pay which they will receive after 17 years, not the current 20-year limit.
An independent expert group will also examine nurses and midwives’ pay, particularly for promotional grades.
“These proposals make important strides for safe staffing, pay parity, and achieving respect for our professions," said INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha
"They are not the end-point, however, and show the way for all grades in nursing and midwifery to get to fair pay levels.
“There have been many untrue rumours and much inaccurate speculation online about this deal. We took the time to present the deal to hundreds of members today and were glad to note a positive reception.
“We would encourage all INMO members to inform themselves of the facts from our website and attend information sessions over the coming weeks.”

Meanwhile, Siptu members have voted to accept an agreement between union representatives and the management of Rapid Action Packaging (RAP) on recognition, pay and grade structure for hourly paid employees at the company’s plant in Gweedore, Co Donegal.
The agreement recognises the right of Siptu to represent employees at the plant. The agreement also contains a three year pay deal which will provide for a 6% increase in basic pay over the three years.
